One of the most common hair problems is dry and coarse hair that doesn’t seem to get tamed despite deep conditioning and using popular home remedies like eggs and honey. When your hair constantly feels dry and rough, it can be difficult to try out new hairstyles or even let your hair down because of how dull and lifeless it looks. Dr Rajat Kandhari, Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatosurgeon, New Delhi, says these are the reasons why your hair could become dry and coarse. Vitamin deficiencies or vitamin toxicity: If you aren’t nourishing your body with adequate vitamins and nutrients, your hair will become dry and rough. Vitamin A and iron deficiency or anemia are known to cause dry hair and other than that, zinc deficiency is also responsible for this symptom. On the other hand, vitamin toxicity or taking excessive vitamin supplements can also cause dry hair. Too much vitamin A can also affect your hair. Protein deficiency: Proteins play an important role in keeping your hair healthy and preventing hair loss. If you follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, you could be depriving your hair of protein which will make it look lifeless. Make sure to add spinach, soybeans, mushrooms, peas, cauliflower and broccoli to your diet to fight against protein deficiency. The climate or weather: If you have to spend a lot of time under the sun without any protection, it will result in dry and coarse hair. Prolonged sun exposure can dehydrate your hair so cover your head with a scarf or hat or carry an umbrella with you to protect your hair. Hypothyroidism: This is a condition where the patient’s thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient thyroxine, which is a thyroid hormone. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism include daytime sleepiness, fatigue and irregular periods. Hair smoothing treatments: If you underwent any treatments like hair bonding, straightening and regularly iron your hair, it will result in dry and coarse hair. Also, if you go for swimming regularly, the chlorine could also damage your hair. Harsh shampoos: Using the wrong shampoo can also strip your hair of all its moisture and leave it feeling damaged. Avoid shampoos that contain lauryl and sodium sulphate to stay on the safer side. Menkes syndrome: This is a rare disorder that affects the copper levels in the body which makes it difficult to gain weight and patients also suffer from dry, brittle and coarse hair. Other symptoms include weak muscle tone, seizures and sagging skin.
